May: Mattresses, At-home Adventures and 33

We decided to use our stimulus check we got from the government for "COVID Financial Hardships" to give back to our local economy in the form of a new mattress. We had our old one since we got married. It was not an amazing mattress, just on we could afford from RC Willey as newlyweds. It had lived a good life. We decided to go with a Purple mattress after reading rave reviews and talking to multiple people who owned them and love them. We are moving on up in the world. The kids were more than happy to welcome our old mattress as their jumping pad/campout pad/floor mat for a few days until we took it to the dump.

Our weekly Disneyland at-home adventures continued through May. We "went" to Galaxy's Edge where we enjoyed Ronto Wraps, Blue Milk and the new Star Wars ride. The next week, we enjoyed Mickey's Grille Cheese and smoothies from Main Street followed by Walt's Chili and Churros from Frontierland and, finally, corndogs from Adventureland. Having this little weekly tradition really added an element of magic to the unknowns of COVID19.

Our daily walks to get away from virtual school and virtual work also continued. These honestly became such a highlight of our days. We all looked forward to them and had fun exploring our own little neighborhood, the sunshine and one another's company.

We also started to explore places in Utah that we had always wanted to visit but never made the time to go. The first were the Salt Flats off I80 just west of Salt Lake. We were all blown away (figuratively and literally) by the magnificence of the flats! The kids loved running around, watching cars "race" and just being wild and free.

The next place we explored was introduced to us by a co-worker of mine. Just north of us is a piece of art created in the 70's on the shore of the Great Salt Lake called "The Spiral Jetty." We fell in love. At the end of our visit, every child was caked in salt from splashing in the water and our hearts were filled with joy from the serenity and beauty of this magical place.

On one of the hottest days of the month, 98 degrees to be exact, we decided to hike up to Patsy's Mine in Farmington. This hike has no shade, no streams and is straight up switchbacks for a mile. Luckily, being able to explore this cave that was dug by a Farmington citizen in the 1800's who, according to legend, saw a shooting star land in that area and started digging to find silver only to abandon it and just disappear from Utah 4 years later. Luke loved going in to the cave and talked about it for days. We were so proud of him for hiking the whole way and not giving up.

We also celebrated my 33rd birthday, complete with a homemade lime cheesecake by Dallin, Spitz a hike and Slapfish for dinner. For Mother's Day, we set up our camera and tripod on the edge of a random weed field off the freeway and took some much needed family photos with Aida. It was much better than our strep-infested birthday/Mother's Day celebration last year!

The in betweens of May included Caleb's last day of preschool, complete with a masked up farewell with his teachers where he gifted them with Caleb-painted potted plants, rock painting, restaurants set up in our kitchen for lunch by Luke, Aida's well-child which was our first trip to a medical facility since all this pandemic business started. That was an adventure of temperatures, questionnaires and service. We also revamped our backyard a bit in an attempt to minimize the damage Augie has evoked upon it, end of year chalk art with Trina before they move, house improvements and just finding ways to enjoy the new way of living.

It is officially summer!
